History of the Allianz


The alliance SE based in Munich is the world's biggest insurance group and one of the largest financial service groups after turnover and market capitalization. The enterprise is listed in the DAX at the Frankfurt stock exchange. It accounted a profit for the year of 4.345 billion euros (previous year: annual deficit 2.187 billion euros) in the year in 2009 at total proceeds of 97.4 billion euros. The holding and her subsidiaries appear worldwide under the name Allianz Group. Chairman of the executive board has been Michael Diekmann since April 2003.

History

Allianz founded by Finck in Munich of Carl of Thieme and Wilhelm a year before Versicherungs AG in Berlin took her operations 1890. The corporation was substantially financed by dresdner AG, Bankhaus Merck Finck & Co, as well as the inhabitants' of Munich founded by Thieme and Finck before reinsurance in the starting time. 1893 the first foreign branch was revealed to in London, 1895 became the shares of the enterprise for the first time at the Berlin stock exchange traded.

In 1906 Allianz passed her first endurance test since she had to do a not insignificant part of the reimbursements after the devastating earthquake in San Francisco. When the Titanic went down in April 1912, Allianz had to make also large compensatory payments.

The subsidiary Allianz Lebensversicherungs-Ag was set up in 1922. During the merger wave rolling in the twenties through Germany several companies were (and others) the Frankfurt insurance AG, Bavarian VersicherungsBank AG, could keep names and till in the 21st century, half autonomously on the market proceeded of the Allianz bought up, this one but partly hers. In 1932 Allianz started her engagement in the loss research and opened a material testing job to the loss research the Allianz center for technology (AZT) resulted from later. It was objective to provide interested enterprises with knowledge gained the loss occurrences for the claim and hazard minimization. From 1933 to 1945 Allianz also assured subsidiary organizations of the NSDAP and developed in the course of the spreading of the German empire of new business fields. The clientele could among others be expanded also by the take-over of Jewish insurance houses.

After the war and the blockade of Berlin 1949, the head offices were transferred to Munich (Allianz Versicherungs AG) or Stuttgart (Allianz Lebensversicherungs AG). In 1958 the group introduced the known advertising slogan " ... " one Allianz hopefully insures, the foreign business was resumed in the year following on this. In 1956 Merck Finck tried to increase his 40 per cent share in Allianz covered, did not reach the objective, though and sold the share in the insurance to 1990 after that completely. As of this time was back the inhabitants of Munich, with which there was a frame agreement besides the 25 per cent over-cross participation about the principles of the cooperation since 1921, the defining shareholder of Allianz.

As of the seventies Allianz became an enterprise proceeding more and more strongly abroad by buy-outs and incorporations. It followed the take-over tradionsreicher insurer in France (AGF), Italy (RAS) and the USA (Fireman's find). The Allianz AG holding was founded for the better control of the participations in 1985, Allianz took the national insurance of the DDR in 1990. The expansion into the eastern part of Europe started with the opening of a branch office in Hungary. In another seven countries of means and Eastern Europe followed with opening of branch offices. Allianz took on 51% of the capital stock of the second largest French insurance, Assurances Générales de France (AGF) in the value of 9.2 billion DM, in 1997. Allianz climbed to the world's biggest insurance group with that. The expansion to Asia started, primarily by the purchase of South Korean First Life Insurance Co. Ltd. in 1999.

The take-over of Dresdner Bank 2001 together with natural disasters in Central Europe, the attack on the World Trade center and the crisis in the international financial marketses, granted Allianz in the year 2002 for the first time in the company history, a negative result. Allianz AG had a loss of approximately 1.2 billion euros. At the same time, her share in Allianz on 20% reduced back the inhabitants of Munich. The united insurance group was wrapped up completely in Allianz in 2002, Allianz Private Krankenversicherungs AG was formed from the sick line of insurance. After alliance and inhabitants of Munich officially also discontinued her frame agreement back in 2003 and reduced her mutual share further (in 2005 keeps the Munich back still 4.9% at Allianz), a far-reaching breakup of the German insurance industry was reached.

Allianz founded the Internet insurer Allianz 24 which, for the time being, (stand: November 2006) exclusively offers car insurances in the middle of September 2005. This is seen formally the "united special insurance AG", an Allianz subsidiary.

The merger with the Italian became final RAS and the simultaneous transformation of Allianz AG into the trade register Munich to a European corporation (SE) with subscription of the new enterprise name Allianz SE on October 13th, 2006. Allianz took the vending machine company Selecta of the British catering offerer Compass Group for a price of about 1.1 billion euros in May 2007.

Allianz SE and Commerzbank announced on August 31st, 2008, that the supervisory boards of both enterprises have agreed on the sale of dresdner AG for altogether 9.8 billion euros to Commerzbank. The sale was completed with January 12th, 2009.

By the whereabouts of Oldenburgische Landesbank AG (OLB) in the Allianz group the section "Allianz banking Germany" which puts the basis for the Allianz Bank was created newly in the ADAG; further details see article Oldenburgische regional bank.
